Enjoying great camping in Africa’s Kalahari Desert is more than just sleeping in a tent beside a campfire. A visit to Makgadikgadi on Hyena Island offers the unique experience of taking a 4X4 dune buggy ride over a dried up lake bed referred to as the salt pans. This area is a mecca for archeology lovers hoping to see such things as stone age relics and animal carcases. When rain returns water to the lake it becomes a haven for exotic birds, zebras and wildebeests.

Central Africa is home to the world’s largest game reserve. Camping in this very remote area can be very rewarding. Visitors have the opportunity to see lions, cheetahs and jackals. Camp life can be very interesting especially if you are visited by huge scorpions and kept company at night by the barking geckos. Visitors may also encounter nests of baby Bateared foxes as well.

A unique experience awaits those who choose to go on a motorcycle safari around Namibia. The ride can offer everything from biking along the desert flats or over the dunes to visiting Africa’s largest canyon. The sighting of elephants, leopards and rhinos is very probable as you ride round the area.

If you are planning a trip, and want to see one of the most gorgeous deserts in the world, you can visit the Namib Desert, and make a trip across the desert by foot with a tour group, or you can consider renting a caravan or a 2-wheel drive, in order to get around, and still keep cool in the arid desert region. Making a trip by 2-wheel drive is a great way for you to travel this bountiful desert, and to really enjoy the scenic views, the plant life, and the wild life which the desert has to offer to the visitors. The full explanation can be found at http://milancia.wordpress.com/2011/08/02/namibia-exploring-a-land-between-two-deserts/

But, if you really want to make sure that you get around the entire desert region, and do not miss out on any of the spots it has to offer to tourists, you are going to want to rent a vehicle, in order for you to make the long journey through the desert region. Not only will it allow you to stay out longer, and enjoy the desert scene, but you are going to be able to keep cool, and get around much more quickly, than if you were attempting ot make the long journey by foot.

The Namib Desert is a desert in the south western region of Namibia. The desert is considered to be the oldest desert in the world. This desert is where you will find the highest sand dune in Namibia. This sand dune is also one of the highest in the world.

It is referred to as Dune 7 or even better known as Big Daddy. Big Daddy is 1,256 ft. from base to highest point. It is 1,870 ft. from sea level. According to the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the dune is a very popular tourist attraction. One can certainly understand why. No where in the world can one see such an amazing sight.

There are few settlements in the area. Life in the region can be difficult. That does not stop some hardy people. Even though it is a desert, the air is almost always close to dew point. This causes some brilliant views when the fog rolls in the morning from the nearby sea.

The Namib Desert is not for the faint of heart, but it is certainly not a site to miss. The Big Daddy, Dune 7, is protected by the government. It has been threatened in the past by off-roaders. If someone plans on doing some 4-wheeling, he or she has better find another dune.

The Kalahari area is located in Southern Africa, covering parts of Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. This enormous area takes up over 350,000 square miles! With all that land, there are plenty of opportunities to experience a wild safari.

The best time to visit for a Safari is January through April. Safaris may be made by horseback, river boat, and guided vehicle. While traveling in any of these number of ways, there is ample opportunity to see tons of wild animals such as lions, cheetahs, elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and zebras. The area is known to be a bird watcher’s paradise.

Tours are offered in various lengths and at an array of costs. It is fairly simple to find a tour to fit exactly what you’re looking for, especially with so many touring companies available in the area. Most safaris range from 4-14 days, but tours can also be custom built to fit your schedule. If you’re a hunter, hunting tours can also be arranged.

While it is possible to do a self-drive through the Kalahari, it is not the most recommended route due to safety concerns. Contact a local tour guide to start planning your unforgettable Kalahari safari!
