View The Highest San-Dune In The Namib Desert
September 14th, 2011 by adminThe Namib Desert is a desert in the south western region of Namibia. The desert is considered to be the oldest desert in the world. This desert is where you will find the highest sand dune in Namibia. This sand dune is also one of the highest in the world.
It is referred to as Dune 7 or even better known as Big Daddy. Big Daddy is 1,256 ft. from base to highest point. It is 1,870 ft. from sea level. According to the Namibian Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the dune is a very popular tourist attraction. One can certainly understand why. No where in the world can one see such an amazing sight.
There are few settlements in the area. Life in the region can be difficult. That does not stop some hardy people. Even though it is a desert, the air is almost always close to dew point. This causes some brilliant views when the fog rolls in the morning from the nearby sea.
The Namib Desert is not for the faint of heart, but it is certainly not a site to miss. The Big Daddy, Dune 7, is protected by the government. It has been threatened in the past by off-roaders. If someone plans on doing some 4-wheeling, he or she has better find another dune.
